Veneers Q & A
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain or ceramic panels that fit over the front part of your teeth. Veneers can change the color, shape, size, and even the position of your tooth.
Most veneers are porcelain. Aquila Dental uses Kierland Smile Design, a world-class restorations lab for veneer creation, so you can count on perfectly made quality veneers that last for many years to come.
There are also other great veneer options, including two ultrathin, non-prep options — Lumineers™ and Emprethin™.
How are traditional veneers different from no-prep veneers?
No-prep veneers like Lumineers and Emprethin are highly durable porcelain, and they’re only about as thin as a contact lens, while traditional veneers are slightly thicker.
Because traditional veneers are thicker, before placing them, your Aquila Dental dentist needs to remove a thin layer of your natural tooth enamel. With no-prep veneers, you can keep all your enamel and avoid the extensive prep process of traditional veneers. Some men and women who experience dental anxiety prefer no-prep veneers because they can minimize their time in the dental chair.
Since no-prep veneers are thinner, they’re also more transparent, so they don’t provide quite as much coverage as traditional veneers do. Both types of veneers have advantages and potential drawbacks for each individual, so your Aquila Dental dentist can help you choose the right type of veneers for your needs.
How does the veneers process work?
Veneers typically take two or more visits to Aquila Dental. For traditional veneers, your dentist prepares your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel from the teeth that need veneers during your first visit. Your Aquila Dental dentist also takes impressions for both traditional and no-prep veneers during your initial visit.
You’ll wear temporary veneers for around two or three weeks, while the Kierland Smile Design lab creates your new veneers. Then, you’ll return to Aquila Dental for your new veneer placement. After examining the new veneers for color, dimensions, and fit, your dentist removes the temporary veneers and fixes the new ones into position using professional-grade dental cement.
